13-man squad named for One-Day Cup clash with Middlesex

26 Apr 2019

Sussex Sharks travel to Lord's on Saturday to take on Middlesex in the Royal London One-Day Cup, looking to bounce back from Wednesday's defeat to Somerset.

The 68-run loss to Somerset was Sussex's first defeat in this year's competition, but following back-to-back wins against Surrey and Kent Spitfires last weekend, confidence will still be high as the squad head to the capital.

Jason Gillespie has made one change to the squad which faced Somerset, with loanee Ed Barnes replacing Chris Jordan, who is unavailable due to international duties.

After his stunning 137* against Kent on Easter Sunday, Phil Salt remains our leading run-scorer in this year's One-Day Cup. Harry Finch is second on the list, with 105 runs, closely followed by David Wiese, who has scored 96, and Luke Wright, who has scored 92.

With the ball, Will Beer has bowled brilliantly throughout the tournament so far, and has an economy rate of 5.00, while Mir Hamza continues to lead the way at the top of the wicket-taking list, with eight dismissals to his name.

Ahead of our clash with Middlesex, Gillespie said: "We’re all looking forward to the match against Middlesex. Playing at Lord’s is always a great experience and Middlesex will provide a strong challenge. It’s another opportunity to entertain supporters and for the lads to enjoy representing our county.

“With CJ now with England, our loan signing Eddie Barnes comes straight into the matchday squad.”

Having scored 188 runs, Nick Gubbins is Middlesex's leading run-scorer in this year's competition, with Steven Eskinazi and Dawid Malan also impressing so far with 169 runs and 145 runs respectively. Sowter has bowled well, taking 11 wickets with an economy rate of 5.69.
