Round-up for the week ending 19th November

20 Nov 2017

There was one appearance for Jofra Archer in the Bangladesh Premier League last week. He took 1/26 as his Khulna Titans were unable to defend 156 against the Dhaka Dynamites on Tuesday. Rain forced the abandonment of the Titans’ game against Sylhet Sixers on Wednesday, whilst Jofra was rested for Friday’s encounter with Chittagong Vikings.

Two Sussex players were in action during that match, however. Both Stiaan van Zyl and Chris Jordan – a late call up to the tournament - made their first appearance of the 2017 BPL during the Vikings’ five-wicket defeat to the Titans. Stiaan blazed 23 not out off 15 balls at the end of the Vikings’ innings, with Chris unbeaten at the other end on one. Bowling second change, CJ went for 28 runs during his 3.2 overs as the Titans secured victory with ten balls to spare.

Luke Wright remains out of action with injury, so did not appear for the Rajshahi Kings during their two matches last week.

After a mid-week arrival in Australia, Michael Burgess was straight into action on Sunday for Adelaide University CC in the West End One-Day Cup, part of South Australian Premier Cricket. Opening the batting, Michael made 35 off 41 deliveries, but AUCC were unable to chase down the 237 Woodville had set them.

Saturday saw the second day of the New South Wales Premier Cricket first grade fixture between St. George and Sydney featuring Ollie Robinson and Delray Rawlins. Delray was dismissed without scoring, but his Sydney side were able to chase down St. George’s 283 from the previous weekend with just one wicket to spare. Ollie Robinson picked up a wicket during his 23 overs, as well as taking a catch.

Both Delray and Ollie were also in action on Sunday, playing in the Kingsgrove Sport Twenty20 Cup. Delray made a 15 ball 24 at number five for Sydney as they posted 147/8 batting first against Illawarra. This was more than enough, with Illawarra only able to muster 109/9. Delray was handed the new ball, and his left-arm spin brought him very tidy figures of 2/12 from his four overs.

St. George played two matches. Their morning fixture against Randwick Petersham resulted in a 15 run defeat. Ollie took 1/30 and then made 14 from 11 during the unsuccessful chase. The seamer was once more on the losing side in the afternoon, as Gordon CC chased down St. George’s 111/9 with more than five overs to spare. Batting at number four, Ollie made 11 from 14 balls. He was the pick of the St. George bowlers, taking two of the three Gordon wickets to fall and conceding only 18 runs.

Abi Sakande completed his debut for Mosman in the third grade of New South Wales Premier Cricket on Saturday. He’d opened the bowling against Fairfield-Liverpool the weekend before, conceding just 39 runs from his 14 overs as the home side were dismissed for just 184. Mosman easily completed a ‘first innings victory’ as they made 308 in response, with Abi scoring six from number nine.

Sarah Taylor and Danni Wyatt were in action for England Women again last week, as the Ashes series moved into its T20 leg. Sarah made a brilliant unbeaten 93 from just 76 balls in Wednesday’s warm-up win against an Australia Governor-General’s XI in Sydney, with Danni chipping in with 12 from 13 deliveries at the death. The first T20 International ended in defeat for England, but Danni put in a fine personal performance, smashing a 36-ball fifty. Both Danni and Sarah contributed to England’s win on Sunday, Danni getting the innings underway with 19 from 16 balls at the top of the order and Sarah making 30 from 23 deliveries at number three.
