Ollie Robinson records career best figures on final day against Loughborough MCCU

3 Apr 2018

Ollie Robinson recorded the best figures of his first-class career as Sussex bowled out Loughborough MCCU for 99 on the final day of the three-day match at The 1st Central County Ground.

With playing time at a premium given the recent weather and keen to give his bowlers as much of a workout as possible, Ben Brown then asked the students to bat again.

Loughborough were more resilient second time round, reaching the close on 71-2 and securing a draw.

Given the torrential rain that washed out day two, it was testament to the efforts of the groundstaff that play was able to get underway at 12.40pm following an early lunch.

After Sussex had declared on their first day total of 337-7, Robinson took the new ball and struck almost immediately, trapping Sam Evans leg-before with the second ball of the innings.

In the next over, Stuart Whittingham, who bowled with impressive pace, had Hasan Azad caught behind by Brown.

The Scotland-international followed this up shortly afterwards with a beauty of a seaming delivery that clipped the off-bail of Oliver Soames to leave Loughborough three down with just 22 on the board.

Robinson then picked up two wickets in two deliveries after pinning James Bracey in front with the last ball of his fourth over and having Charlie Thurston caught by Harry Finch at second slip with the first ball of his fifth. Nick Hammond did well to deny the right-armer his hat-trick.

Robinson’s fourth wicket came in his next over as a second catch for Brown saw Loughborough in big trouble at 38-6.

A brief period of calm was ended when Will Beer – Robinson’s replacement at the Sea End – fizzed a delivery past the defence of Hammond and knocked back his off-stump.

Robinson’s return to the attack heralded a swift end to the Loughborough innings as he cleaned up the tail with three wickets in eight balls to finish with 7-23 from his 9.4 overs.

The 24-year-old went wicketless in Loughborough’s second innings, but illustrated his lack of loose deliveries by conceding just eight runs from his six overs.

Beer also demonstrated superb control, bowling eight overs for nine runs and picking up the wicket of Azad thanks to a sharp catch at short-leg by Phil Salt.

After causing difficulties with some steepling bounce, Abi Sakande was rewarded with the wicket of Bracey who edged to Finch for his second catch of the day. That prompted the captains to call it a day.
